Each morning I stumble my way out of bed and down the stairs, get my coffee, and start up my computer to check for new members at YMX, get rid of junk email, see which of the blogs on my google reader have updated, and check some stats. But this morning, when it came to the start-up-my-computer-and part the computer whirred to life but the internet connection didn’t. Uh oh.
Not having time to do much troubleshooting before getting my kids to school, I tried a couple of times to connect without any joy in the result. After getting back from the school run, I grabbed more coffee and started investigating in earnest. Sadly, after a number of different angles, I found the good news (nothing wrong with my computer) and the bad news (our 3-year-old linksys router died in the night). The only thing the router was doing was consuming electricity… resetting… unplugging… attempting log in… nada. This is not good in a home where one person essentially works on the web and 4 others spend significant time connected each day. This was fast becoming a connectivity emergency.
Now, I do realize that 3 years is a very long time for a linksys wireless router, but it just wasn’t what I planned to do today! In the end, I squeezed some nickels and got a router I know I won’t be aggravated by every time more than one of us is online. So, here I am at 9:30 pm and I just finished my morning web routine on our new-and-improved home network powered by the apple airport extreme. Disaster averted.
