And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Come after him where? Through death earned by sin into the eternal life with God he redeemed for us.
Deny myself what? The gratification of the sinful nature.
What does it mean to carry my cross and follow? The rabbi’s yoke – his ways and teaching. To learn to be like him in every way.
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
To keep my life for my will and my way – to make it all about me – is the way of sin. To give my life to Jesus’ way and make it all about him is to be who God created and purposed me for.
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
I am humbled to follow Jesus’ way, not ashamed. Lord, teach me more and more to be like you so that those I come into contact with might see your kingdom.
