And then, as a burning faggot was laid at the feet of Ridley, Latimer spoke his famous words: “Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle. By God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.”

Jesus, I pray that the fire will not go out of the Church of England and the Episcopal Church. Please raise up more witnesses in our day.

    Amen, Torre, amen.

For my non-Anglican friends passing by, the referenced Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, are Bishops martyred by being burned at the stake in 1655 for the integrity of the Church in England, followed some months later by the martyrdom of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury for refusing to submit to Rome. It is legacies like these among that great cloud of witnesses which make the Anglican heritage of faith one worth the fight.
